1. Remove the intake manifold cover and set aside.

It's attached by four 10mm captive bolts. These captive bolts are held in place by rubber grommets after they have been completely unscrewed from the intake manifold.

2. Drain the grime

Run the filter drain hose to a container suitable to catch diesel fuel and open the drain valve.

You may need pliers to loosen the valve, which can be mounted just about anywhere along the drain hose. The drain hose starts at the bottom fuel management software of the filter housing. Trace it until you find the valve. On this Suburban it was conveniently placed at the front of the engine, shown in the photograph at the front corner of the manifold cover.

If your valve is higher than the fuel filter housing, as it was in this case, you'll need fuel pressure to drain the water and grime from the bowl. Turn on the ignition but do not start the engine. The lift pump will start and push the contents of the filter housing out the drain tube. You only need to push a few ounces of fuel out until the fuel runs clear.

Turn off the ignition first and then tighten the drain valve. This will relieve pressure in the filter. If you tighten the drain valve and then turn off the ignition, the fuel filter housing will be pressurized.

3. Remove the old filter

Loosen the bleed valve at the top of the filter. It's the small black circle with an integrated bleed hose nipple. This will assure the housing is no longer pressurized.

Remove the filter retaining ring, the large ribbed plastic ring around the top of the filter housing. If it is too difficult to remove by hand, position a large screwdriver on a rib and TAP lightly with a hammer to loosen.

With the ring removed, the filter lifts straight up and out.

4. Clean the housing

Check the bottom of the housing for foreign matter, and clean if necessary.

5. Install the new filter

Carefully install the new filter paying attention to the large slot on the filter and large tab on the housing (see illustrations above). Don't twist the filter into the housing -- align the tabs and press straight down until the filter is fully seated. Twisting or repeated insertion/removal will fuel management system damage the sealing gasket and you'll be heading to the parts store for a new filter.

Clean the threads on the retaining ring and lightly lubricate with all-purpose grease to ease the next filter change. Screw the ring on the housing, being careful not to cross-thread it. If you have trouble getting the threads to align, the filter may not be inserted all the way into the housing.

6. Bleed air from the system

Air in a high pressure diesel fuel system plays havoc with your engine. To remove the air you introduced by opening the filter housing, attach your bleed hose to the nipple at the top of the filter and run to a suitable diesel fuel container.

Turn the bleed valve about an 1/8 turn open (counter-clockwise).

Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine. The lift pump should run continuously. If you used a clear pvc tube you will see fuel and lots of air bubbles traveling through the tube. If fuel is not running through the tube, open the bleed valve a little more. If fuel is running out of the top of the filter around the bleed valve, the valve is open too far. Let the pump run until the fuel is clear without air bubbles.

Tighten the bleed valve and then turn off the ignition. The fuel lift pump should stop.

It's no secret the foreclosure crisis has drastically changed the real estate sales market, no matter where you live. We've all heard the foreclosure horror stories: People being mistakenly foreclosed on, home values plummeting due to a glut of foreclosures in the area and empty homes being havens of criminal activity.

What's less talked about, but equally as frustrating, is the effect the foreclosure crisis has had on renters. According to updated data published by the National Multi Housing Council last September, 34 percent of U.S. households are considered "renter occupied." It's likely this number will continue to grow, considering multiple sources -- including the New York Times -- have reported a significant uptick in foreclosures during last quarter.

Housing market predictions for 2012

FHA's financial condition worsened in October

There's a level of trust renters are forced to have with their landlords. They pay their rent every month assuming things will be fixed when they break (depending on the lease terms), that they'll be able to get in touch with their landlord and, at the very least, that the rent they're paying will provide the roof over their heads. Sadly, with the onslaught of foreclosures and the current prevalence of short sales, sending in your rent check no longer guarantees a place to live.

Though some renters become homeowners by purchasing short sale property for pennies on the dollar, many find themselves in a tug-of-war between their landlord and the bank. I've heard horror stories of tenants who were completely unaware their landlord was behind in their payments coming home to find they have a very short time to find a new place to live. It's stressful and scary, and many renters have no idea how to handle this predicament.

Fewer homeowners underwater, but number is still high

Home sales up, but housing prices continue to fall nationwide

So what should you do if you find yourself renting an underwater property that's listed as a short sale? The folks at Zillow have some suggestions for tenants in this situation:

Buy yourself some time. A lease is a legal document, and it's possible the new owner of the property is required to honor its terms. You won't know without contacting a real estate attorney. Get some legal counsel to find out how long you can stay in the property while looking for a new home. If you can't afford an attorney, search your area for a tenant's rights organization which may be able to point you in the right direction.

Get your money back. Get in touch with your landlord and ask for a refund of your security deposit. This money can go a long way towards securing new rental housing.

Buy your home. Provided you're living in a condo or house, and not a multi-unit apartment building, this third option is a great one if you have the money. If you like where you live and have the funds and credit score to do it, why not buy your place from the bank?

Whatever option is best for you, communication is key. Get in touch with your landlord to find out what the timeline is so you can best protect you and your family.

And if the landlord or property management company stops taking your shortsale experts phone calls, and you come home one day to find a foreclosure notice tacked to your front door, call the lender pronto. It's possible that you'll be able to make payments directly to the lender and stay in your rental unit long enough to figure out your next move.

The Chinese make up the fastest-growing market of foreign buyers of U.S. homes, according to Juwai.com, a Chinese website for global luxury real estate.

"We're huge believers in China," says Mauricio Umansky, CEO of TheAgencyRE.com, a Los Angeles real estate company that caters to foreign buyers. "Anybody not reaching out to the Chinese is losing out on an amazing opportunity."

Umansky tells ABC News that in the Los Angeles area alone he closed 40 sales with Chinese buyers in the past year, up from 15 the year before.

See slideshow of celebrity homes.

The Chinese, he says, prefer brand new (or like-new) amenity-rich residences in a short list of U.S. cities that include New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Maybe you could sell an old fixer-upper with "charm" to a European buyer - the Norma Desmond estate, for example, says Umansky, but not to a Chinese buyer.

If your home is new, located in one of these top 10 cities (see the full list below), or if it's near a high-ranked college or university, that's a plus.

Umansky says his Chinese customers also understand brands and the value of names such as Ritz Carlton, Beverly Hills and the University of Southern California. He says he's had great success selling residences in a new Ritz Carlton development right next door to USC.

But even if your home is not so favorably situated, say experts, there are still things you can do to make it attractive to a Chinese buyer.

Read about the 10 priciest streets on the planet.

Dolly Lenz, founder of Dolly Lenz Real Estate in New York, has spent 25 years traveling to Asia to build up a Chinese clientele.

"The Chinese are the most knowledgeable and intuitive buyers I have," she tells ABC News. "You can't sell to them, because they do their homework and come to you with a knowledge base that will amaze you. You have to gain their trust by adding value, meaning you have to tell them what they don't already know. The more you can tell them in terms of financial issues, tax issues, the more they will respect you."

Lenz says she has a number of properties in Manhattan that have garnered favor with Chinese clients, including a four-bedroom penthouse in what used to be the Plaza Hotel (now a condominium residence) with views of Central Park.

"The Chinese are not short-term, get-rich-quick investors," she says. "They're strategic buyers, looking for long-term plays in properties that represent a store of value for their money."

Data compiled by the National Association of Realtors shows that Chinese purchasers in recent years have bought an even mix of detached single-family and multifamily houses, with a median price of $425,000. About 69 percent of purchases have been all-cash, while 31 percent have been mortgage-financed.

Brendan DeSimone, a real estate expert with Zillow, has sold properties in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area to Chinese buyers. He offers the following tips:

Pay attention to lucky and unlucky numbers. In Chinese culture, 4s signify death. When quoting a date or price, stay away from them, but 8s are lucky and desirable. So, don't schedule an open house for Jan. 4. Schedule it on Jan. 8.

Similarly, work 8s into your asking price. Don't list your home for $7,900,000. List it for $8,000,000.

Read how a home listing that mentioned a Rolls Royce drew super-wealthy check that buyers.

Consider hiring a feng shui consultant: A home whose furnishings and grounds have been why not try these out arranged according feng shui principles becomes more salable.

Finally, treat the Chinese buyer with respect. If an initial offer is laughably low, don't laugh.

"Don't be insulted, don't blow it off," says DeSimone. Respond respectfully and stick with it. Negotiations with a Chinese client, he says, may take longer than with other buyers. Be courteous, honest and patient, and you may get your asking price.

Here's Juwai.com's list of the top to U.S. cities for Chinese buyers:

1. New York

2. Los Angeles

3. Philadelphia

4. Detroit

5. Houston

6. Chicago

7. Las Vegas

8. Atlanta

9. San Diego

10. Memphis, Tenn.
